We are at Ko Adang in the Butang Islands in the South Western part of =
Thailand. We arrived here this afternoon and started making plans to =
go for a snorkel. The water around here has this strange murky red =
plankton on the surface which looks a little like red tide. Anne and =
Frank jumped in the water and swam to shore. Frank came back soon =
saying the coral was great and the red plankton clears up when you get =
closer to shore but it stings a little. So we started swimming through =
it and I didn't have a second skin on so I decided to swim back to the =
boat with Kerry and we took the dinghy to shore instead.
So we're snorkeling in coral that's between 1 and 6 meters deep on a =
steep drop off to 30 meters with about 15 meter visibility with murky =
water offshore and I'm taking some great photos with this disposable =
underwater camera when a black tipped reef shark swims by. I grab =
Kerry's arm and point, she sees it and we both haul ass back to the =
dinghy. I shove her in, go get mom and shove her in too and jump in =
myself almost beating mom into the boat. We sit there and are kind of =
laughing and Kerry's turning paler by the minute. She saw jaws when =
she was 8 so - you understand. I'm talking tough sitting in the little =
blow up boat, but there's no amount of money that'll get me back in =
either. And no, I didn't get a photo of the shark, I was too busy =
trying to shove Kerry out the way - ahem - save Kerry - to get a photo.
The fishing around here are amazing. Frank was casting with a 12 ft =
rod set up with a huge travelli popper and I was fly fishing where we =
saw the shark and the next thing this massive travelli starts chasing =
Franks popper across the water. I got a good side view and he looked =
between 12 to 16 pounds. He didn't get hooked though. I was fishing at =
sunset further down the coast and another large fish, probably a =
travelli snapped the popper right off my fly leader. So I'm set up =
with steel leader now and I'm going back tomorrow morning at 6am to =
get the bugger.
We're heading into Langkawi tomorrow and are looking forward to some =
awesome duty free shopping there.
Mark, Kerry and Jaws.
