We spent last night at Racha Yai and the diving was spectacular. We =
all went for about three dives yesterday and saw some amazing coral. =
The tourist boats that are so ubiquitous in thailand were present as =
usual and at one point we were attached to a floating buoy with two =
tourist boats strung out behind us on lines off our aft cleat. It's =
amazing the coral is in such great shape with such heavy traffic. The =
boats are only at the various islands from around 10am till 4pm so we =
usually have the place to ourselves during early morning and late =
afternoon.
Late yesterday afternoon we saw a bill-fish of some kind (either =
sailfish or marlin) jumping about 300 meters from the boat hunting =
shoals of fish. So I swam out and did some free diving off the drop-=
off where we saw it. I didn't see any big game but saw the shoal of =
fish it was hunting. The tidal currents around here are very strong =
and on the surface before I went down I could see strong upwelling and =
a cross current. When I got out there the cross current wasn't too bad =
but because of the upwelling there were the strangest thermoclines all =
the way down. Usually in tropical warm water there might be one or two =
thermoclines on the way down and the temp will drop slightly and then =
there's a sharp drop about 1 meter before the bottom at around 20 =
meters. But here it was all over the place. One minute you're warm as =
toast and another you're freezing. But with 20 meter visibility I =
wasn't complaining. :)
Little sis is leaving this morning so we partied pretty hard last =
night and someone decided to get an early start this morning. So I =
woke up to 20 knots of wind, a 2.5 meter chop and got seasick within =
minutes on the way back to Phuket. I HATE being seasick. It hit Kerry =
a bit too - we're both similarly calibrated when it comes to bad =
motion.
Gotta go. More later.
