Sorry you haven't heard from me for a while friends/family. We've been =
doing quite a bit of sailing. We left Yacht Haven yesterday morning. I =
just confirmed that with everyone else and we're all freaked out =
because it seems like it was days ago.
We spent last night at Ko Roi, an island a few miles from here. I =
think this area has anabatic and katabatic winds (day and night =
breezes) and Frank (my dad) initially anchored us on a very windy side =
of the island claiming that the wind would die in an hour. But it was =
so uncomfortable that we moved to the other side only to have to move =
again back to where we were when Frank was proved to be correct.
Moving back wasn't easy. The anchor got stuck and we struggled to get =
it up. Night fell and it was still stuck. Mom and I struggled with the =
windlass and at one point we thought we'd pull the windlass right out =
of the deck with the pressures we were exerting as Frank revved the =
engine and tried to dislodge it. We thought it was wrapped around a =
bommie (coral head) but when we finally got it up after an hour it had =
a brick and some thick nylon rope wrapped around it, so it was =
something man made.
I caught my first fish on a fly rod today. I was using Frank's salt =
water rod with a very small crayfish on an 8 pound leader and picked =
up some very small rock fish in the shallows. We're going to be =
heading south from this evening onwards and the water will clear as we =
go south so we'll have better fishing and diving.
The Hong's are beautiful and because we're on our own boat we explore =
them in the late afternoons after all the tourist boats have left. =
Hong's (in case you don't know) are islands with steep cliffs that =
have holes where the water meets the land. You can go into these holes =
and find either a cavern or a cavern where the roof has collapsed. The =
word Hong means room in Thai so it's kind of like going through this =
little hole into a giant cathedral with or without the roof.
I hope you're all well. Kerry and I will be writing daily now. I'll =
write another entry later on how we manage to post from the boat =
without an Internet connection.
